Cosmic-rays: an Unsolved Mystery at All Energies!

نویسنده

چکیده

We consider the phenomenology of cosmic-rays (CRs) and stress the interest of jointly studying their properties over the whole energy spectrum. While UHECRs are known to raise important physical and astrophysical problems, we recall that low-energy CRs also remain poorly understood, and we indicate the possibly important role of superbubbles in accelerating CRs up to a few EeV. We also investigate the viability of holistic models, and show that a unique type of sources producing CRs with a spectrum in E could in principle account for all the CRs in the universe.

Cosmic rays at the highest energies

After a century of observations, we still do not know the origin of cosmic rays. I will review the current state of cosmic ray observations at the highest energies, and their implications for proposed acceleration models and secondary astroparticle fluxes. Possible sources have narrowed down with the confirmation of a GZK-like spectral feature. The anisotropy observed by the Pierre Auger Observ...

Rapporteur talk for Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays ( HE 1 . 3 , 1 . 4 , 1 . 5 ) : Messengers of the Extreme Universe

In this report I summarize contributions on the highest energy cosmic rays to the 28th International Cosmic Ray Conference in Tsukuba, Japan, Sections HE 1.3, 1.4 and 1.5 involved over 80 oral presentations and about 120 posters. This large body of work attests to the vitality of a field committed to resolving the mystery of the origin of ultra-high energy cosmic rays. These cosmic rays with en...

Theoretical and Experimental Topics on Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays

Since their first observation in 1962, the existence of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR) remains a mystery in modern astrophysics. Those cosmic rays, with energies well above 50 EeV (50 × 10 18 eV), can hardly be accelerated, even in the most active parts of our universe such as FR-II radio galaxies or AGNs, nor can they travel on distances larger than 100 Mpc. In the following some of the...

A study on the lateral distribution of Cherenkov light in extensive air showers

The dependence of the lateral distribution of Cherenkov light in simulated extensive air showers to the energy and the mass of the primary cosmic rays has been studied. It has been shown that a previous claim about mass independent proportionality of shower energy to the total Cherenkov photon number is not valid in energies below EEAS ~ 1014 eV. We have found that the core distance of the so c...

CosmiC Rays: a CentuRy of mysteRies

* E-mail: [email protected] If you open your hand parallel to the ground, as if you were catching some raindrops, your hand will be traversed by a number of elementary particles moving close to the speed of light. Some of these particles were produced in very energetic events far away from our Solar System. The most common of these particles have been travelling throughout our Galaxy, th...
